Five unbound volumes (ca. 190 p.) of autograph manuscript copies of letters written by William E. Prince as commander of the United States Army 1st Infantry at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Letters relate to Civil War operations of the United States Army in Kansas, Missouri, and other western states, including recruitment of soldiers, securing of cities and forts, and relations with American Indians. Most correspondents are army officers, War Department officials, and other public officials, including James Henry Lane, Nathaniel Lyon, James Montgomery, and John Charles Frémont.

James Montgomery came to Mound City (Linn County) Kansas from South Carolina. He was a pioneer, soldier, and military officer. He served during the Civil War in the 2nd Carolina Colored Infantry on the Union side. He was with the 3rd Kansas Infantry when they opposed General Sterling Price's raid into Kansas during the Kansas-Missouri border troubles, 1855-1861. James Henry Lane (1814-1866) was a noted military and political leader of Kansas. He was active in his home state of Indiana, serving as a military commander in the Mexican War (1841) and later as Indiana's Lieutenant Governor from 1849-1853. Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861), soldier and author, was born in Ashford, Conn. A graduate of West Point, he served in the U.S. Army as lieutenant in Florida fighting Seminole Indians, at Sackets Harbor, N.Y., as captain in Mexico during the war (1845-1848), and in "Bleeding" Kansas.
